In the previous chapter, we discussed press-plate electroplating, which is one of the most traditional electroplating methods. Its biggest characteristics are high electroplating precision and wide applicability to various types of products, but its electroplating efficiency is relatively low. To further improve electroplating efficiency, the static electroplating mode has gradually transformed into the following roller electroplating mode.
The press-plate is sliced into blocks, strung together into a wheel, and then electroplated, as shown in the following figure:

The rolling electroplating mode eventually evolved into the following two types of mechanical electroplating modes:
Tank chain type
Integral disc type (i.e., the current small wheel plating)

Integrated Circuit Lead Frame Tank Chain Selective Plating Equipment
Tank chain-type plating involves assembling multiple masking modules into a belt-like shape, resembling a tank track. The lead frame closely adheres to the silicone-based belt-shaped plating mask (Chain Type Plating mask) and rotates along with it. The electroplating solution is sprayed upwards at a high speed through a specialized block anode (Anode Plate) from the bottom of the mold. The areas of the mold with openings are plated with a silver layer of corresponding thickness.

The electroplating solution is sprayed through the anode plate (Anode Plate) onto the back of the plating mask (Plating Mask). As the mask is closely attached to the lead frame (Lead Frame), the frame products corresponding to the pre-drilled holes on the mask will be selectively plated.

The tank chain selective plating equipment is suitable for mass production of lead frames for PLCC, QFP, TQFP, SOP, SSOP, TSSOP, SOT, SOM, DIP, PDIP, and other devices that feature high density, complex plating areas and structures, and large product pitches.
The production speed ranges from 3 to 12 meters per minute, and the plating area control accuracy can reach ±0.075mm.

Its selective silver plating has an effective length of up to 600mm, featuring fast plating efficiency, high yield, and a 20% reduction in costs. It is suitable for high-density and complex plating area structures.

The entire silver plating module has a relatively complex structure but high stability. Generally, it requires maintenance and replacement of worn parts during monthly cleaning of the electroplating line.

Due to the uniqueness of its silver plating module and mold, tank chain continuous selective electroplating is currently less utilized in China, with only a few lead frame manufacturers venturing into this field.
